14/09/19

It has been a successful start to the term in Year 5, we have made a good start on our new topics and have already managed to produce some really pleasing learning!

One of the highlights so far has to be the tribal dances that we created  in order to better understand some of the characters in our English book,  King Kong.

22/03/19

This week, we have resumed our Latin classes with Mr Christie, as well as taking part in an rousing drama activity:

Welcome back to Spring term 2 in Year 5

This term we are continuing with our topic of Ancient Greece and look forward to examining some poetry during Literacy Week!

We also have an exciting visit booked to see Random Selfies, a local production being shown at Ovalhouse.

Welcome back to Year 5!

After a very successful Year 4, we are all ready to hit the ground running this term.

Spellings and homework are due on a Tuesday and PE kits will be required from Monday - Friday (to be taken home and washed at the weekend).

This term, our topic for science and IPC is space, this will be reflected in home learning, trips and assemblies.

Houses of Parliament Visit

On Friday, Year 5 visited the Houses of parliament - we visited the queens quarters, house of commons and house of Lords! We then got to debate and vote on a topic chosen by us - No more homework - We had the opportunity to discuss our opinions and at the end voted at to whether we wanted to keep homework or to get rid of it. The house voted to get rid of homework!

Look out Mrs Linsdall - there will be a few children wanting to come to speak to your about acting on this bill!

Celebration of Learning

Come along on Friday 13th July 2018 to celebrate your children's achievements this year! Pick a session and join in with their learning and let them lead you on their individual learning path.

Your child will have been given a letter about the day, choose a session you would like to come to and return the slip to Miss Greenway.

Hope to see you all there.

English this term

The Arrival is a migrant story told as a series of wordless images that might seem to come from a long forgotten time. A man leaves his wife and child in an impoverished town, seeking better prospects in an unknown country on the other side of a vast ocean.

The children have really been enjoying this book - the story is told through pictures so the learners have to put the words into the characters from what they see.

This week, we have been working on division. We have used manipulatives (Diennes and place value counters) to explore how we can make sense of division.

Extra grammar and punctuation help

To help your child with their understanding of grammar and punctuation, I will be handing out an extra piece of homework on a Friday. These will be short and fun activities. These additional pieces will be due in on the following Tuesday (along with their other weekly homework).

I know the children will really benefit from this.

Thank you for your continuing support.

Welcome back.

Hope you have all had a great Christmas break and are ready for learning.

This term our topic is Ancient Greece. This is an exciting topic that I am sure you are all going to enjoy.

Here is this terms homework tasks.

This week in Year 5

In maths we have been learning about fractions. We used the fraction wall to help us to find equivalent fractions and to compare and order them too!

Look at our learning from this week.

In English we have been using famous poems to inspire us to write our own.

Can you see what the rhyming pattern is?

Welcome back!

I hope you had a great half term break. This half term we are going to be focusing on writing some caligrams about space.

We were lucky enough this week that we had a poetic super star come in and create some incredible poetry with us. Adisa the Verbaliser came in and we wrote about astronauts that don't leave the earth.... confused? So were we until Adisa introduced us to the Dogon tribe from Mali.

Here are some of our poems that we created, we are very proud of them!

In Maths this week we will be focusing on division and word problems.

Have a go at some of these problems:

1. George bought 25 bottles of pop for his party.  He carried them home in boxes of 6.  How many boxes did he need?

2. Tamara needed 43 plastic cups for her party.  They came in packs of 6.  How many packs did she need?

3. Rosie’s reading book had 438 pages.  She read 25 pages every night.  How many days did it take her to finish the book?

4. Joshua is £28 short of £300.  He wants to buy some England tickets.  They cost £38 each.  How many can he buy?

This week in Year 5, we have been looking at characteristics of character from our new book King Kong.

Wow! Look at our rocket homework projects, you have all worked so hard and the work has really paid off.

Science Week

This week year 5 have been investigating electricity as part of science week. We looked at circuits using buzzers and light bulbs. We investigated different scientific questions and proved them right or wrong.

Homework help.

As you know, your task this weekend is to write a letter to the cinema. I have created a word bank that you may find helpful.

Good luck and I cannot wait to read them on Tuesday!

Our trip to the Synagogue

We had a great morning learning about Judaism at the United Reformed Synagogue in Streatham with year 2. We got to look at some real Torrah scrolls, tried on Kippahs and had the opportunity to hear the teacher say a Jewish prayer in Hebrew.

Some of us got to try on the talit and used the yad to read from the scrolls.

We learnt a lot and will even talk about what we have been learning in R.E in our assembly on Friday 27th May.

Homework

This week we have 2 tasks to complete. Use these videos to help you with your learning.

In our complaint letters we looked at different ways commas can be used. We looked at inverted commas too. Here is a useful video to help you with this weekends task.

6th May 2016

This week we have been busy complaining! We have looked at planning and writing our own complaint letters. Here are some examples:

We had a great day! Thank you all for making such a brilliant effort.

Sports Relief Mile (and a bit)

Today year 5 took part in a sponsored mile in order to raise money for Sports Relief!

We had so much fun doing it and most of us ran further than the 1 mile needed.

Here are some photos of us giving it a go.

This weeks homework is to research about the Shakespeare play Macbeth.

  • Find a version of the story that you will understand
  • Find out about the characters in the play - who are the main characters?

Friday 26th February

This week we have been exploring water resistance by making and testing different hull shapes. Once we had designed and made our boats they were ready to be raced. We added a weight onto each boat and raced them in a water tray. To make it a fair test we used the same materials, same weight and our boats had to be a similar length, width and depth. Our only variable was that the hull shapes could be different.

Planning and drafting time!

The finished product!

Race Time!

Half Term Homework

I hope you all have a lovely break and keep yourselves safe.

Here are the sheets for your holiday projects. Just click on the pictures below to see the homework and any resources you may need.

Remember you must complete at least 2 of the projects due in on Monday 22nd February.

See you all in a week!

4th January 2016

In year 5 we have been looking at the Ancient Greeks. This week our BIG QUESTION was Democracy. We learnt about how the Ancient Greeks brought in democracy and compared it to the sort of democracy that we live in today.

Children got the opportunity to answer what they thought democracy was in small groups.  Children got a little snippet into what Democracy was but not too much as I wanted to get some more questions out of them.

All children in the class were able to understand what democracy is.  Some were able to adapt ideas and discuss why some countries still don’t have it.  A small group were able to talk about how it effects them –  Lucas – Why are children not allowed to vote?  Kiki – We can vote for things in school – so we sort of have a small democracy at Christ Church.  Valentino – I wonder what it would feel like not having democracy.

19th January 2016

On Tuesday we invited Miss Kirby from St Luke's Primary school to come in and join in with our learning.

We had a maths challenge using money. Our learning objective was:  I can develop my investigatory skills using money. We used a money grid and created questions for our partners to answer about the money grid.

Can you think of any mathematical questions about the money grid?

Chernor said "Which row has the most pounds in?"

Treneyce said "Can you find the the difference between the most valuable row and the least valuable row?"

Josh asked "What is your most valuable column?"

15th January 2016

Firstly, I would like to thank all the parents who came to watch year 5's assembly. As chosen by the children, we acted out the scene from our Windmill Cluster performance of 1000 cranes.

It was another incredible performance and they all should feel incredibly proud of themselves.

8th January 2016

Welcome back!! I hope that you all have had a restful break.

Literacy

Over the next few weeks in literacy we are going to be exploring the Grimm brothers tales. We will be solving murder mysteries, kissing frogs and trying on glass slippers. Here is an adaptation of the story we are reading this week. Warning - it is a little bit more gruesome than other versions but in year 5 we love it!

Maths

This week we are looking at place value. Children have been looking at numbers up to 1,000,000.

We played a game - here are the rules, maybe you can play at home.

Takeit turns to roll a 1 to 6 dice. If you roll 1, you add 1, if you roll 2 you add 10, if you roll 3 you add 100, 4 you add 1000, 5 you add 10,000, 6 you add 100,000 (you must write each addition). The aim is to get as close to 1 million as they can but they must not go over or they lose!

Here is a place value rap that might help you remember some key vocabulary.

4th December 2015

Firstly, I would like to thank you ALL for donating so many cakes and biscuits to sell in our cake sale on Monday. It was an incredible afternoon and we raised a fantastic £98.32!!

We sold out of all the cakes in about 20 minutes. Looking forward to the next fundraiser in the new year!

Black Cultural Archives

Today we went to go and see our cartoons on display at the Black Cultural Archives. It was a lovely morning. Children had the opportunity to read out some of their poems and got to perform them in front of St Lukes. It was a really nice chance to get to hear and see what other children in the Windmill cluster have been doing.

13th November 2015

This week in Year 5

This week we have been very busy.

Maths

We have been learning about different methods to multiply large numbers.

Look at this method - have a go at trying to see how it may work.

Adissa

We had the company of Adissa on Friday afternoon. We started to create some amazing poems about Ignatius Sancho.

Ignatius Sancho was a composer, actor and writer. Sancho was born in 1729 on a slave ship and spent the first two years of his life enslaved in Grenada. He worked as a servant in Greenwich and then for the Duke of Montagu. Sancho taught himself to read and spoke out against the slave trade. He went on to compose music and write poetry and plays.

Our Art and R.E week display is now up in the hall. Here are some photos of the display. Please do some in and have a look.

6th November 2015

Welcome back to a new half term

We have had such a busy week in Year 5 this week. It's R.E and Art week this week and this week we are focusing on parables. We have been looking at the Parable of the Birds and the Lillies of the fields.

We have been looking at William Morris and have tied it in with our parable about the birds and the flowers.

William Morris used pattern and shape to entwine his design into lavish interior designs.

Here are some of our work in the making. We will be displaying them in the hall next Friday!!

Here is our parable to share with you:

One day a large group of people was gathered around Jesus on a hillside and he began to teach them. "Don't worry about whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear," he said. "There are more important things in life than food and clothes." Then he went on to teach them a lesson about worry.

"Look at the birds in the air," Jesus said. "They don't worry where their next meal is coming from. They don't store up grain in barns. And yet, the Heavenly Father takes care of them. Surely you are worth more to him than a bird."

"And why worry about your clothing?" Jesus continued. "Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, and yet Solomon in all his glory wasn't dressed as beautifully as they are. If God cares so wonderfully for these wildflowers, surely he will take care of you. Why do you show your lack of faith by worrying about these things?"

Year 5 Projects

Year 5 are very lucky this term - as part of the Windmill Cluster and the Black Cultural Archives we have visited by 2 fantastic professionals to come and teach us about drama and poetry.

Poetry Session

Over the next 4 weeks we will be inviting the performance poet Adissa to our classrooms to link with our Black Cultural Archives project.

Today he came in and told us about a Georgian man called Billy Waters - the children had the opportunity to start creating their own poetry with the help of Adissa.

Drama Sessions

This week in our drama sessions with Danielle we looked at masks. We looked at how our body can help us to exaggerate our emotions on stage. We got given our parts for the final production and we even had a run through. I t was a great session and everyone worked so well as a team.

23rd October 2015

Diversity day

It has been a great day today at Christ Church Streatham celebrating our cultural diversity. The whole school assembly was a really nice way to see how our individual class values are being encorporated into our learning.

We had a great day celebrating where our familites come from. We had a lot of food from all areas of the world. Children were really proud to come in and talk about what they had brought with them and some even shared some lovely stories about their lives.

We had salt fish from the Carribean, Spinach and Feta pie from Greece, Special rice from Morroco, dumplings from Ghana, Chi Chi from Nigeria, Plantain from Jamaica, Victoria Sponge from Britain,

15th October 2015

Science Museum Trip

We visited the Science Museum as part of our topic on Space. We had a great day finding out lots about famous astronauts, how people got to space for the first time and looked at some real life rockets. We then went to the IMAX to watch a 3D film about Nebulas and how stars were born. Did you know that we are all little bits of stars that explododed billions of years ago?! Incredible! We thought so...

5th October 2015

This week in Year 5

We have been learning about famous astronauts and writing our own space stories.

Year 5 have been very creative in their writing and are coming up with some brilliant ideas so far. Watch this space I will be adding some snippit of our short stories on here.

As part of diversity month here at Christ Church Streatham we are wanting to find out about you and your families.

Here is the sheet explaining the details. Children will be given a hard copy on Friday along wiith their usual English and Maths homework.

This project is due in on 20th October 2015

Click in the tree to find out more.

28th September 2015

Come and look at what we have been doing in year 5.

Our class value is Spirituality.

We created our own creative, spiritual spaces and relfected on what we think makes us spiritual as a class.
