Friday 11th May

In our Science lessons this week, we have been investigating what plants need to grow well. We planted some cress seeds and put some in the fridge with no heat, some in the cupboard with no light, and some in the classroom with no water. Others, we treated well, giving them heat, light and water. These grew really well so we knew our seeds were working!

We found that the ones in the fridge went hard and cold. They didn't grow at all. The ones without water didn't do anything. They looked exactly like they did when we planted them. The ones in the cupboard tried to grow but they were very yellow and didn't look very healthy. From this, we concluded that plants need light, warmth and water to ensure they grow well.

Friday 9th February

This week we completed our studies on Dick King Smith's The Hodgeheg by designing and making our own hedgehogs out of clay. Over three different sessions we made our hedgehogs and left them to dry, we painted them, then we varnished them to make sure they stayed strong. Finally, we wrote a set of instructions to describe how we had made them and these are now on display in our classroom.

This week we have had so much fun weighing and measuring in our maths lessons. We started off by measuring our heights then moved on to measuring our feet in cm and mm. We had to be really careful and make sure we measured accurately, along the longest part of the foot.

Next, we moved on to weighing. We passed around a 1kg bag of sugar to see what that felt like then we picked objects from around the room and had to guess their weights, thinking about if they weighed more or less than 1kg. We sorted the objects into two hoops - one for objects which weighed more than 1kg and one for items which weighed less.

Finally, we conducted an experiment to see who in the class had the heaviest shoe and recorded our data in a bar chart. What a busy week!

This term we have been studying Fantastic Mr Fox. We started by looking for clues in the text to helps us read expressively. We now understand that when we see words in italics, the author wants us to be expressive and really stress those words. We also practised getting into character by acting out the opening scenes from the book. We thought about how we could use the space and use details from the book to really bring our characters to life. Here are some pictures of our acting!

Fantastic Mr Fox

This week we will be writing our own stories based on Fantastic Mr Fox so stand by for updates!

Friday 13th January

Thank you to all the parents who came to help us celebrate Year 3's outstanding achievements in our celebration assembly on Friday. It was a great opportunity to acknowledge the children's efforts during the year so far. They should all be very proud of themselves. Well done Year 3!

Wednesday 21st December

Congratulations on another amazing term, Year 3! We have learnt so much this term and had a lot of fun along the way.

Christmas Home Learning:

Please write a diary entry to describe your best day from the Christmas holidays. You could pick Christmas Eve or Christmas  day, or if you don?t celebrate Christmas you could describe a lovely day spent with your family and friends.

Don?t forget that diary entries need to be written in the past tense. You should include lots of interesting details about what happened and describe how you felt on the day.

Please finish your diary entry by drawing a lovely picture of your special day.

Please also learn the following spellings ready for a test at the start of term:

actually          different        because        decide

Remember     believe           possible       probably

Monday 12th December

After an enjoyable few weeks studying and writing our own humorous poetry, we were finally ready to publish our finished poems. Here is one example, entitled 'A Snow Creature Ate Our Teacher.'

Thursday 6th December

Today we were lucky enough to go on a visit  to the Sikh Gurdwara in Tooting Bec. We found out that Sikhs have some important traditions such as taking off your shoes and covering your head before you enter the Gurdwara. We all had to do this before we entered to show respect.

At the Gurdwara we saw some things that we had been learning about in our studies of Sikhism, such as the Chaur. This is a fan which is waved over the holy book by an attendant.  We also heard all about the 5ks - the comb, bangle,  long shorts, uncut hair and sword which Sikhs wear at all times.

We had an opportunity to ask as many questions as we wanted whilst at the Gurwara and enjoyed listening to the answers.

Friday 4th November

This week we have been learning how to write instructions. We started by writing some simple instructions describing how to make a balloon powered flying car. Then when we tried to follow our own instructions to make the car it became clear we had missed out lots of important information! Each step of the way, we tested our own instructions and edited and improved them to include the steps and details we missed out. Here are some pictures of our experiment. Feel free to come into our classroom to read our finished instructions.

Friday 21st  October

We had an amazing day today, visiting the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill. We had a hands-on Ancient Egypt workshop where we got to look at ancient artefacts up close and think about what they might have been used for. The objects were very delicate as they were up to 3000 years old! We had to wear special gloves so that the oils in our hands wouldn't damage them. After that we have a chance to explore the rest of the museum, which included a mummified crocodile!

Friday 14th October

This term we have been learning all about the properties of shapes. We learned what nets are and investigated their properties by predicting which nets would make cubes and which wouldn't. We had to use all our knowledge about faces to help us, and we checked each of the nets to see if our predictions were correct. After that, we made our own 3D models of square based pyramids using straws. They look just like the Ancient Egyptian pyramids!

                 pyramids

Friday 30th September

This week we have been learning all about mummification. We even had a go at mummifying some of our friends in the classroom! We discovered that the Ancient Egyptians believed in life after death so wanted to preserve the body so that it could be used in the afterlife. The process took a very long time - up to 70 days! To find out more about mummification, please feel free to come in and read the mummy making recipes we wrote in our topic books!

Friday 23rd September

This week, we have been writing our very own books based on John Hegley's 'Stanley's Stick.' We each chose an every day object like a sock, a scarf or a stapler and imagined all the different things it could become. We planned our stories, drafted them and then edited and improved our writing. On Friday afternoon, we even designed and painted our own front covers. Our books are going to be proudly displayed in our classroom as soon as they are finished. We'd love it if you came in and had a look!

Friday 16th September

It's been another action packed week in Year 3. On Thursday we travelled down to Brixton on the bus for our very first swimming lesson. Some of us had never even been in the water before, so it was a very exciting experience. We are all looking forward to improving our swimming skills over the course of the year.

This afternoon we had our first Art lesson. We studied some leaves we found near the school and drew them in our new sketch books, practicing different ways of using our pencils so we could add details in lighter and darker tones. Here are some examples. We hope you like them!

Year 3's Enterprise Week Sale

Thank you to everyone who purchased one of Year 3's tote bags that we have made for Enterprise Week! We had to conduct market research to find out what the most popular designs and colours might be and then use this in our designs. We are hoping by the end of term to have made a fantastic profit!

Kew Gardens

We had a fantastic time on our trip to Kew Gardens.

The palm house gave us the opportunity to see lots of different types of plants from around the world.

We found Nemo's friend Dory in the aquarium.

We had a great time becoming plant scientists by studying plants carefully and identifying parts of plants and seeds using telescopes.

Can you guess which animal we're imitating? We had to hide our acorns in the lawn and then find it again later on.

Admiring some of Kew's more glamorous residents.

Homework and trip

The first week of the new homework project has started to come in and they look brilliant. The homework is due every Tuesday and a copy of the homework is on our class page on the school website.

A letter went out to parents and carers on Monday 13th June about our trip to Kew Gardens on 1st July. Please could all parents and carers return these to the office or Miss Williams no later than Friday 24th June. We are looking for 3 adult helpers for the day, so please indicate on your letter if you are able and willing to do so. Thank you.

My Money Maths Week

Year 3 are learning what it means to be entrepreneurs this week. We have around £5 per child to spend on financing a  project to design, make and sell tote bags. First, we had to do some market research! We have been asking other classes questions about what sort of product they would like and researching our competition on the market using ipads. Watch out for the next generation of Alan Sugars and Richard Bransons!

Clean for the Queen!

As part of Christ Church's celebrations for the Queen's 90th birthday today we have been helping to clean parts of the school. Year 3 tackled the school cloakrooms and lost property areas. We're really looking forward to our  whole school tea party on Friday afternoon.

Maths Olympiad

Four members of Year 3 went to Richard Atkins school today to participate in a Maths Olympiad with other schools from the Windmill Cluster. Groups of children from eight schools had to compete against each other and answer mental Maths questions as quickly as possible to earn points. The children had a fantastic time and we're really proud of them!

Stone Age Now Press Play

Today Year 3 participated in an exciting storytelling experience using Now Press Play. We listened to an adventure story told through the eyes of a child living in the Stone Age and had a great time retelling the tale using movement.

This is what we thought...

"I enjoyed all of it because it was like I was there and I imagined it." - Elsa

"My favourite part was when we got to go on a boat and jump on to the land because it was like I was in the water." - Seraphin

"My favourite part was when we were at the fire because it felt like I was with the family and in the Stone Age." - Varun

Mathletics

Don't forget to log on to Mathletics this weekend to explore. When you log on, you will be able to change your character to look like you!

Activities will be set next week, which will be part of your homework. Don't forget to try Live Mathletics - you get to play against other children in school, country, or even around the world! The more answers you get correct, the more points you can earn. This way you get to unlock special achievements, but also you can earn a certificate.

Mathletics this way!

Science week

Year 3's  Science week has built on what we have learnt so far this term about sound. As well as considering and testing out which materials make the best sound proofers, we have thought about how people who have hearing impairments communicate. We learnt the British Sign Language alphabet and used it to tell each other our names and short sentences.

If you want to practise at home, you can find the alphabet here .

Homework due Tuesday 24th May - Use a fact sheet and your own independent research to create a fact poster about Guru Nanak. This is part of Year 3's RE learning about Sikhism.

Stonehenge fact hunt

This week we found out that by the Neolithic period of the Stone Age people in Britain had started to use farming to support themselves. We explored the mysterious monument of Stonehenge by going on a fact finding treasure hunt! Ask us about what we found out.

Turns, angles and Beebots

We have started to learn about turns and angles in Maths this week. We found that a quarter turn is the same as the minute hand on a clock moving a quarter of an hour.

Next we planned a route using quarter turns for our Beebots. We tested out our routes, but found that we made a couple of mistakes and our Beebots went the wrong way! As a group we decided what changes to our route we had to make and re-programmed the Beebot to complete our routes.

Ancestors

Year 3's topic this half term is early mankind. We will be learning about life in Britain from the Stone Age to the end of the Iron Age. We started by thinking about what an ancestor is. We thought that ancestors are members of your family and people who lived a long time ago. After looking at a timeline showing how much of our history has been written about, we realised that our earliest ancestors go back many thousands of years. Everyone considered what our earliest ancestors might look like. These were some of our ideas....

"They would hunt animals and have to take off their skins to wear because there were no shops."

"You made fire by rubbing stones together."

"People lived in caves because it was difficult to build houses. They didn't have everything they needed."

"My ancestor lives in a jungle. There weren't many buildings around."

"He has a knife made out of stone. He had to make it himself."

Easter projects and Egyptian masks

This week we have been adding the finishing touches to our Egyptian masks. After painting the masks, we varnished them.

We have also been busy over the holidays creating our Easter projects about what the Holy Trinity means to us. Please do come into the hall this week to admire Year 3's hard work.

Ancient Egyptian mask making

This week we have been designing and creating Ancient Egyptian burial masks. The Ancient Egyptians used burial masks to help the person be recognised in the afterlife. First we looked at some different examples and discussed the masks we saw on our trip to the British Museum. We used these to design our own masks. Next, we rolled out clay to around 1cm in thickness and transferred our designs to the clay. Then we sculpted and carved different features onto our masks.

After the clay dried we painted the masks white as an under-layer and then used our designs to paint the masks using colour.

Sport Relief

Today Year 3 participated in a sponsored mile to raise money for Sport Relief. Everyone had lots of fun, as you can see from our photographs. We're looking forward to finding out how much money we will have helped raise as a school.

Book Week

Many children in Year 3 joined others in the school by dressing up as characters from their favourite books for World Book Day. We are currently exploring the picture book  Freefall by David Weisner. The book follows a boy's dreams and we studied the book's detailed illustrations, thinking about what we could see and what we thought was happening.

On Friday, Year 3 performed their Lent assembly to the rest of the school and parents. The whole class worked really hard to learn their lines and speak clearly. We have been learning the hymn 'God be in my head';

God be in my head and in my understanding

God in my eyes and in my looking

God be in my mouth and in my speaking

God be in my heart and in my thinking

God be at mine end and at my departing

Year 3 focused on the line 'God be in my eyes and in my looking.' We thought about the story of blind Bartimaeus, whom Jesus healed because of his faith.  Some of Year 3 read out lines of list poems we wrote about healing and sight;

Lord, heal me from dark feelings and sadness. Let me see your light.

Lord, heal my worries and let me see hope.

Lord, heal my lack of self-confidence. Let me see myself as you see me.

Lord, touch my heart and let me see the way to heaven.

Lord, heal my frustration to see the good inside people and not what they do wrong.

Lord, help my family to have a good life and see happiness every day.

23rd February 2016

Today Year 3 went on a trip to the British Museum to explore artefacts from Ancient Egypt as part of our IPC topic. We had a fantastic time doing an artefact and symbol treasure hunt. Our favourite parts of the day were seeing real mummies and sarcophaguses as well as a statue of Tutankhamen. We started by studying the Rosetta stone, the key to translating hieroglyphics. We had to look very closely to see all the different languages carved into it.

12th February 2016

We have been learning about why the Ancient Egyptians mummified their dead and how they did it. We started by creating our own mummies in three minutes.

We decided that the key to making a great mummy was to make sure that there were no gaps for air to get in and decompose the body.

29th January 2016

Year 3 went on a class trip today to the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon to see a production of the book we have been exploring in literacy, Beauty and the Beast.

Polka theatre 1

We had a fantastic time watching the play and now feel inspired to write our own versions of the story next week. Here were some of our reviews of our favourite parts:

Sashana: I enjoyed it when it first started because it felt really exciting.

Habraham: It was scary when the witch cast spells and walked past us.

Hanan: Belle's singing was funny.

Christian: I like the sword fight because of the way that the beast moved and blocked Daniel.

Asharna: I thought that it was clever how the beast turned into a prince and I liked the dance at the end.

Ange: It was creepy when Belle went into the castle and the fairy told her lies about the beast.

Wilson: My favourite parts were the fighting and the kissing.

22nd January 2016

Today was Year 3's class assembly, celebrating all the different ways that we serve others and God. Thank you for all parents and carers who attended to watch the children share their learning. As well as confidently performing the story of Daniel in the lions' den, we read out this prayer;

Dear Lord.

Allow us to serve you with happy hearts, always giving. Help us to understand what others need and to share your love with them just as you have shown your love to me.

Amen.

Continuing our Egyptian topic this week, we read an account of Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. We were lucky enough to interview the archaeologist ourselves. He had a lot to say about how long it took to find the tomb (8 years!).

15th January 2016

This week we found out that the mystery book we are reading is Beauty and the Beast, by Michael Morpurgo. We have continued to explore the characters we have met so far, using role play to question the different characters. We have had some very interesting and gruff responses from the beast!

This is our second week of our topic on Ancient Egypt. To start this week's learning, we had to use our new vocabulary about life next to the Nile to help us get to the end of our Egyptian board games!

Science homework this week following our first lesson about forces is to keep a diary of different actions that you do during the day that involve pushes and pulls.

8th January 2016

Happy New Year to everyone! In maths this week, Year 3 have been doing some place value work, placing 3 digit numbers on a number line from 0 to 1000. We practised counting in 100s, 50s and even 25s to help prepare us for creating our own number lines. Yellow table even made a challenge game for the rest of the class to guess the number!

Our top tip for getting started is to mark halfway along your number line. As Year 3 know that half of 1000 is 500, this then helped us to fill in other multiples of 100 on our number lines.

In English we have started to read a new, mystery book. We have been introduced to some of the characters already and made predictions about what will happen and what the title of the book might be.  We made emotion graphs to show how one of the characters was feeling as  we read the first part of the story.

Y3 emotion graphs

On Friday we had our certificate assembly. Well done to everyone for achieving their certificates for behaviour and swimming!

18th December 2015

Last week Year 3's homework was to represent the Christmas story in a creative way. This could have been a piece of writing, a poster, an artwork or something of the children's own creation. We have had a fantastic range of work submitted, which everyone should be really proud of. We have been enjoying looking at some 3D nativity scenes as part of the project.

This week Year 3 have been busy making lots of Christmas crackers to sell at Christ Church's Christmas fair. We were delighted to sell every cracker and raise money along with the rest of the school for the PA. Thank you to all who attended and helped out.

16th November 2015

This week is Maths week and we are doing lots of investigations in Year 3 this week to help our problem solving skills. Today we used lots of different resources to represent numbers to help us identify patterns between odd and even numbers.

We found out that when you add two odd numbers together the total is always an even number. When you add an odd and an even number the total is always even. This will help us check our addition work in the future.

During RE and Art week Year 3 have been learning about the story of Bartimaeus, a blind beggar who was healed by Jesus. After asking for mercy, Jesus placed his hands on Bartimaeus' eyes and gave him his sight, telling him "Go, your faith has made you well."

We used role play to retell the story. The class acted as the crowds who made fun of Bartimaeus before he was healed. We decided that they changed their attitudes after the miracle and showed Bartimaeus more respect. Everyone wrote healing poems and shared lots of ideas about the effect that Jesus had on Bartimaeus' life.

We have been looking at Swiss artist Paul Klee and how he used colour and shape to create abstract images. This inspired us to create artworks to reflect on how the world might have looked to Bartimaeus in the moments after Jesus healed him.

Come and see our artwork and poetry on display in the hall and in our reflection area!

23rd October 2015

This afternoon Year 3 hosted our own Diversity Picnic. As you can see, some of us wore clothes from our familys' backgrounds and we brought in traditional food to share with each other. We had a fantastic day celebrating our different backgrounds.

19th October 2015

Today Year 3 went to the Natural History Museum to learn about volcanoes and earthquakes as part of our IPC learning.

We found out about some famous earthquakes and volcanoes and checked where they have occurred on an interactive atlas.

Volcanologists wear heat suits to protect them while working. Did you know that they can withstand temperatures of up to 1,000 degrees celcius?

Often people who live in places where earthquakes are common keep a 'go-bag' or an emergency bag to help them survive in a natural disaster. We drew some items we would include in our own go-bags. What would you put in yours?

Seisometers measure the size of the waves caused by earthquakes. We created some waves of our own to observe how the seisometer works.

Our favourite part of the trip was experiencing a earthquake for ourselves in a Japanese shop just like the one in CCTV footage from the Kobe earthquake in 1995.

Maths through photography workshop - creating mathematical artworks

We looked at the photographs that we took last week and created artworks out of them. We used mathematical vocabulary to write about what the photographs showed us.

Maths through photography workshop - treasure hunt

Our third workshop involved going on a mathematical treasure hunt. We learnt about how to frame photographs to capture different shapes and measures.

We found different types of quadrilaterals.

We discovered that there are lots of parallel lines around the playground.

We have already measured our height, so now we found objects that are the same height as some of us!

Maths through photography workshop - taking photographs using a pinhole camera

During our second workshop, we used our pinhole cameras to take photographs. We kept the pinhole lens covered until it was time to take a photograph. Photographic paper was put in the cameras and the boxes were sealed. Next, we chose our photographic subject and uncovered the lens.

Pinhole taking photos

We had to make sure that our cameras stayed still while the cameras had enough exposure to capture a picture.

After, we developed our negatives in a dark room!

Maths through photography workshops

Over the last four weeks Year 3 have been taking part in a workshop learning about measuring using photography.

First, we looked at camera obscuras, which are an early type of camera.

Pinhole camera making

We then made our own pinhole cameras. We had to measure accurately and carefully to ensure that the cameras would work.

Year 3

We are a Rights Respecting school, and our class charter shows the different rights that our children have and things they can do to ensure they, and every child have those rights.

Class Charter

Our topic this term is Active Planet, where we are finding out about volcanoes and earthquakes. Over the summer, the children made information posters and some even created their own 3D volcanoes, which we have begun to erupt.

Active Planet

At the beginning of term, Year 3 set ourselves learning challenges to work on this term. Ask us how we are challenging ourselves! We will see how far we have come later on in the term and give ourselves some new challenges!
